Pretty for daytime.

I love the kind of artfully undone, versatile makeup that can see me through any occasion in style, and can actually be applied without a thousand different tools and products, all in a reasonable amount of time. This kind of look also means I can get ready for the day, and then adapt what I’m wearing as the occasion requires. There’s no daytime occasion that isn’t perfect for neutral brown eyeshadow and a ladylike shade of pink lipstick. And there’s no nighttime occasion that isn’t perfect for slicking on red lipstick to transform that very same daytime look into something a little more special.

Recently, one of my favorite Youtubers, Harry Makes It Up, filmed The English Rose Natural Makeup Tutorial, and the elements of this look fit my idea of artfully undone to a t. The eyeshadow placement, emphasizing the lashline rather than the crease, is natural and flattering on any eye shape. It’s also easy to recreate, which means I don’t have to think very much about placement and whether anything I’m applying will be visible on the puffy eyelids that allergies so kindly inflict. Shadows like the ones from the Rimmel Glam’Eyes Quad in English Breakfast are perfect. They’re cool-toned, so they complement my skintone well, and they’re sheer enough to achieve a subtle wash of color. When I want my lashes to look soft and natural, but with a certain je ne sais quoi, I’ll go for the Clinique Chubby Lash Mascara in Black Honey rather than boring black.

This eyeshadow look pairs perfectly with anything else I want to put on my face. I’ll often skip the reddish flushed cheek that Harry paired with this eye, and stick to a more monotone pink cheek and lip combination for day. I love wearing NYX Cream Blush in Tea Rose with Rouge Dior Nude Lip Blush in Swan. I could go on for days about my love for the perfect pink blush and lipstick, but that would fill a whole post.

A little more dramatic for evening.

For evening, I gravitate toward Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick in Envious, my favorite lipstick formula and the most vibrant, classic red I’ve ever owned. One swipe from the bullet allows me to create a perfect shape while it covers my lips completely and evenly. It feels creamy and comfortable, transfers minimally while eating and drinking, and stays put for hours. By some sort of black magic, the color also makes the redness from any of my blemishes fade into obscurity. These lipsticks don’t get enough love, and they are the best I’ve ever tried. Hands down.

This look has really inspired me to streamline my approach to makeup. I find myself increasingly drawn to the idea of a signature look that I can wear every day. Who doesn’t want to be the woman who can wear a beautiful look better than anyone else? I think this desire comes down to a sense of realizing who I am, what I want, and how I want to present myself. I don’t feel the need try on a different personality every day, so why should I feel the need to wear a different makeup look every day?
